Dwight Holder rode brilliantly to dominate the field and take top honours when the Felix Austin Police B Division training school held their annual Anniversary cycling event which was held in collaboration with the Flying Ace Cycling Club and coordinated by Coach Randolph Roberts. The activity brought the curtains down on the college’s week of activities.
The race which was open to cyclist in both East and West Berbice and cyclist of the Flying Ace Cycling club was held last Sunday. The cyclist pedaled off at approximately 09:15hrs from in front of Training school base at Adventure, Corentyne then proceeded to Corriverton on the Upper Corentyne before turning back to end at the point of origin, covering a distance of 50 miles.
Numbering about 15 riders, including 12 males and three females, they were sent on their way by Commandant of the training School, Superintendent Ian Amsterdam.
As the riders made their way on the upward journey, defending champion Neil Reece was being pressed by Holder, Rohan Persaud and Nashane Jaundoo as they battled for position. Reece soon found himself in some difficulties and bowed out of the event.
Dwight Holder continued to press on and using his superior sprinting power was able to stave off his opponents to capture the event.
Rohan Persaud held on for second as he finished ahead of, Nashane Jaundoo third. Fourth was Juban Crawford with Elijah Brijjader fifth, Wasim Hasnoo sixth and Keith Griffith seven rounded out the top finishers. They received monetary rewards ranging from $7,000 to $2,000.
Holder, Persaud and Jaundoo took one sprint prize each, receiving $2000 apiece. On the distaff side three females participated in their segment of the race, which was held from Number 35 village to the Training School covering a distance of five miles with top female cyclist Maricia Dick taking top honours from Crystal Lambert and Shivani Capeldeo. They were rewarded with trophies compliments of the Police Consumers Coop.
Nashane Jaundoo was the winner among the juniors and was presented with a trophy compliments of Ganesh and Brother business establishment.
Among the Juveniles Crawford, Brijjader and Brian Harris occupied the top three positions and were rewarded with trophies compliments of Republic bank. The respective winners were presented with rewards immediately after the event by Superintendent Amsterdam, Inspector Stephens and other staff members of the training institution.
The commandant speaking at the presentation ceremony congratulated the participants while giving special commendation for the winners and words of encouragement for the non winners. He said that the race and other anniversary activities have now become an annual event and plans are in the making to make it a bigger spectacle.
