‘Anaconda’ gets further two-year jail sentence

Dennis Williams, popularly called ‘Anaconda’, a high profile inmate of the Camp Street prison who is answering to twelve counts of murder, was yesterday jailed for two years by Magistrate Sueanna Lovell for possession of a prohibited article while in prison. Corporal Gillian Simmons, who represented the prosecution, alleged that on June 17, 2009 at the Camp Street Penitentiary, Williams had in his possession a cellular phone which is a prohibited item for inmates at any detention centre.
The accused who was unrepresented was not require to plea. During the summary trial three police witnesses were called to the stand.
The last hearing, yesterday, saw the prosecution closing their case, and paved the way for the Magistrate to rule.
During yesterday’s proceedings, the court found Williams guilty and handed down the jail sentence.
Anaconda is the inmate who was responsible for the recent fire at the ‘Bricks’ division of the Camp Street Jail. Up to this date reports on whether any one was charged for that incident are yet to be authenticated.
This accused also received a three-year from Magistrate Lovell for attempting to break out of the said prison. He along with several other men was implicated in the GuySuCo payroll heist.
During last month, a Magistrate sitting at a court on the West Bank of Demerara dismissed those charges against all of the suspects.
Anaconda, his associates, Mark Royden Roberts, called ‘Durant Williams, Clebert Reece called ‘Chi-chi’; Michael Caesar and Roger Simon are all suspects in the slaughtering of 12 persons at Bartica on February 17, 2008.
Magistrate Fazil Azeez who is hearing that case, on the last occasion established that a prima facie case was made out against the five accused. They were committal to stand trial at the High Court.
Those who lost their lives during the Bartica Massacre were Edwin Gilkes, Irving Ferreira, Ronald Gomes, Baldeo Singh, Dexter Adrian, Deonarine Singh, Abdool Yassin, Ashraf Khan, and Errol Thomas, and three police officers, Ron Osborne, Zaheer Zakir and Shane Fredericks.
