Caribbean Container Inc has joined the chess family with exclusive sponsorship of the Easter 2011 Chess Tournament. The tournament begins this Saturday April 16 and concludes on Sunday April 24, 2011 at the KEI-SHAR’S Sports Club, Camp and Hadfield Streets, Georgetown. The Swiss System tournament consists of seven rounds and all chess players are invited. Recording of moves is compulsory and all participants are asked to walk with a pen and a tournament size chess set. A time control of one hour and thirty minutes plus thirty second increments from move one will be allotted to each player.
The competition is also FIDE rated, which allows non-rated players to earn FIDE rankings, if successful in tournaments against players with FIDE ratings. There are currently less than ten chess players in the country with FIDE (World Chess Federation) ratings. Wendell Meusa is currently the highest FIDE rated player in Guyana.
In a simple ceremony, Company Secretary and Administrative Director of Caribbean Container INC, Ms. Patricia Bacchus yesterday handed over a cheque and trophies at the company’s head office, Farm, East Bank Demerara to Vice President/Tournament Director Irshad Mohamed of the Guyana Chess Federation. The senior official pledged her company’s support of efforts being made to promote intellectual sports. Mohamed expressed gratitude at the presentation ceremony to Caribbean Container INC. for its partnership with the Chess Federation.
Registration begins at the tournament venue at 14:00 hours on Saturday for junior chess players and the first round in that category begins at 15:00hrs. Registration time for senior players is 15:30hrs and their first round starts one hour later. The fee for adult members is $300 and $200 for junior members. For non-members the fee is $800 for seniors and $600 for juniors.
Trophies and cash prizes are at stake in the competition. For registration or more information please contact Mr. Irshad Mohamed on 664-1650 or Shiv Nandalall during working hours on 225-8270.
