Under the Georgetown solid waste programme $64.4M will be awarded for the final closing of the Le Repentir Landfill Site, this is according to Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon.
Dr Luncheon was speaking at his most recent post Cabinet Press briefing yesterday, where he pointed out that to accommodate the garbage that was strewn about the physical environment of Le Repentir, some of the cells that were closed and could have accommodated more garbage was reopened.
He said that ultimately the garbage from the periphery and surrounding areas was deposited into those cells and closure was attempted. However, the finality of the closure will see all of the cells confirmed closed along with the environmental rehabilitation.
Dr Luncheon explained that the environmental rehabilitation entails correcting the roads in the surrounding area, cleaning up of gravesites that have garbage strewn on and around it, and the upgrading of the area that was subjected to varying degrees of degradation.
During the latter part of last year, Government was forced to render support to the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown, the entity under which the existing Le Repentir landfill site falls, since the maintenance was out of their control.
Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn, at that time said that the existing problem at the site is mostly one which stems from poor management, adding that the unsanitary
condition that prevails should have never occurred.
The recent intervention by Government was regarded by Benn as one which has yielded fairly satisfactory progress thus far.
It was in recognition of the diminishing capacity of the landfill site and the fact that it was encroaching, that a request was made to Government to create the Haags Bosch facility.
The Haags Bosch facility was officially opened in February last by the then Local Government Minister Kellawan Lall. The $4 Billion project was financed by the Inter-American Development Bank and the Government of Guyana.
