Charles Goodluck, a 62-year-old security guard of East Canje, Berbice, who was previously charged with murder, manslaughter, attempted murder, assault and wounding, among other charges, all committed on former female partners, was yesterday sentenced to one year in jail by magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.
Goodluck was jailed for the felonious wounding of his former lover, 57-year-old Maureen Johnson of Angoy’s Avenue and a security guard attached to the RK’s Security Service. The incident occurred on April 8, last year.
Goodluck who was initially charged with attempted murder, had that charge substituted for one of felonious wounding.
It was revealed that the two were in a relationship for about six months, after which the woman decided that she had enough of Goodluck, who was very abusive to her, and decided to end the relationship.
The court was told that on the day in question, the woman was at work at the St Aloysius Primary School at Garrison Road, New Amsterdam, when Goodluck visited and begged her for a chance to make up. The woman reportedly told him that she had enough of him and that he should “go his way”. Goodluck however did not heed her advice.
When she was relieved from work that evening, she was again approached by the man who told her that he was serious for them to make up again and he would be the best lover. However she continuously rejected his pleadings. The man then held on to the woman’s neck and told her, “If I can get you nobody can”. He then pulled out a knife and plunged it into the right side of her face and attempted to stab her again.
The woman began to shout for help and was rescued by someone in a passing car. She was taken to the nearby New Amsterdam Hospital where she was treated and sent away. Goodluck was later arrested and charged and was in remand until he was sentenced.
The state case’s was presented by Corporal Roberto Figueira.
