The amateur boxing sector will receive a timely boost to its pool of trainers when Terrence Poole, a level one boxing coach affiliated to the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), hosts a 4 days coaching clinic for persons interested in improving their knowledge and skills of the intricacies in this department.
Activities get underway at 10:00hrs this morning at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue and conclude on Saturday. The programme will be conducted in a two tiered format where those now being introduced to the trade will receive certificates while the established officials will use the programme as a refresher course. The beginners will receive certificates at the end of the sessions. To date, some ten persons have signed up for the programme and officials are expecting a further 15 participants when activities get underway today.
Sessions would be conducted by International Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) Level one boxing coach, Terrence Poole, whose extensive knowledge and experience garnered after attending courses in Hungary and other countries, will be an asset to the budding officials.
Mr. Poole intimated that the course was conceptualized to lift the standard of the local pugilists and create a platform for their development in the fistic sport. He said that GABA is petitioning the officials of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) to organize a solidarity course to compliment the current initiative. Consequently, local coaches would aim for upgrading courses hosted by the parent organization.
This is the first time that such a course would be conducted locally and Mr. Poole said that it is indicative of the diligent efforts of GABA’s executives to create the environment for the development of local trainers and by extension, their charges.
The morning sessions will get underway between 10:00hrs-12:00hrs before breaking for lunch. Activities will then resume from 13:00hrs-15:00hrs.
