Dear Editor,
According to media reports, President Jagdeo has referred to PNC presidential candidate David Granger as an “old man.”
My father was advanced in age when he walked tirelessly from Berbice to Georgetown in the name of free and fair elections in Guyana, no easy task for an “old man.”
Among other values, I was taught respect for elders by my father, and also humility, especially when you hold high office.
Leaders who are admired and respected have earned that admiration and respect. I would say I held former presidents Cheddi Jagan and Desmond Hoyte in high esteem.
I can only hope our future leaders refrain from using personal attacks while on the hustings, and display some level of political maturity that would make all Guyanese proud.
