The Chambers of Commerce in Berbice have all expressed their satisfaction with the Government of Guyana Street- lighting project which is well underway in the Berbice area.
A recently released statement stated that the Upper Corentyne Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCCI), Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCCI) and the Berbice Chamber of Commerce and Development Association (BCCDA) would hereby like to express our appreciation to the Government for the installation of streets lights along sections of the Corentyne highway.
“Already we have noticed a decrease in nocturnal vehicular accidents and greater usage of the roadway in the nights for fitness and leisure activities.”
The chambers stated that the many benefits that will accrue as a result of the street- lighting project include transforming or modernising the face of East Berbice thereby attracting investors and boosting investor confidence; enhancing the sense of security of the residents and visitors and act as a deterrent to criminal activities in East Berbice; reducing the amount of road fatalities that are due to the lack of street lights and high presence of animals on the road in the night; greater and safer use of the newly paved Corentyne Highway for both national and international traffic at nights (benefits both Canawaima Ferry Service and local hotel and tourism industry); improving the local tourism sector by allowing for more night based entertainment and services; will enable public transportation to extend their hours of service; employers and employees can extend their working hours (shifts) resulting in increased earnings, production and productivity; students can attend evening classes to improve their knowledge and qualifications; and greater participation in after-work, community-based activities involving NGO groups which can result in upliftment of communities.
The release added that the chambers would like to have the installed street lights fully functional at the close of the project and added to the Maintenance Contract which exists for some other parts of the country.
The street- lighting project kicked off a few months ago along the major thoroughfares in the Berbice area and has been executed in phases, from New Amsterdam to Palmyra; Fyrish to Port Mourant and Number 79 Village to Crabwood Creek. However, persons have been calling for the project to be extended to the Number19 Highway.
There have been some concerns as well that many of the installed lights worked for a while then stopped working.
