GCC, DCC register emphatic victories
By Sean Devers
The present standard of local first division cricket is arguable not much higher than the third class level of 25 years ago and it was not unexpected that three of the four First-Class batsmen who played in the last round of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) two-day Carib Beer/ Heroes Cup first division competition registered centuries.
When the latest round ended in the City yesterday, an unbeaten double century from Test player Ramnaresh Sarwan (203) and a hundred from Vishaul Singh spurred GCC to an innings victory against Transport at Bourda, while Gajanand Singh followed up his first innings century with 95 in the second to spearhead DCC to a crushing win against Everest.
But the star of the round was 19 year-old left-arm pacer Andre Stoll who achieved the rare feat of scoring two centuries in the same first division match when he thumped a pugnacious unbeaten 109 at the Eve Leary ground as his side Police took first innings points in their drawn encounter against Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC). This was after 18-year-old Carlos LaRose has notched up his maiden ton at this level for MSC.
Stoll, who played two games for Guyana in the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board T20 Festival last year December at Guaracara Park, hit West Indies under-19 Selectee Kwame Crosse for consecutive sixes to reach his second century of the match despite delaying tactics from MSC. At this point the game was called off with Stoll on 109 with 11 fours and five sixes to add to his 101 in the first innings.
Stoll (bowled off a Kareem Naughton no-ball on 73) treated the inexperienced MSC bowlers with disdain and cleared the small straight boundary with ease as Police reached 310-8 in their second innings. Kevin Singh and Jason Heyliger supported with 34 each.
Earlier, MSC resumed the final day on 72-2 replying to Police’s 308 and were dismissed for 232 as LaRose, a former Guyana under-15 Captain, followed up his two second division centuries with his first at this level.
Crosse, who leaves on Thursday to join the West Indies under-19 team for their tour to Dubai, supported with 34 while Damien Vantull made 24.
Jason Heyliger had 3-23, Vishal Jaigobin 3-70 and Parnell London 2-19 did the damage with the ball for Police.
At DCC, the one-sided contest was over by 13:30hrs as off-spinner Denis Squires snatched 6-39 and Totaram Bishun 4-9 as Everest were dismissed for less than 100 for the second time in the game.
After making 223 and bundling out Everest for 80 in their first innings, DCC began the second day on 34-3 in their second innings and the left-handed Singh fell five runs short of his second century of the match.
Jamal Hinckson (35) was the only other batsman to pass 15 before he was bowled by Christopher Surat who also disturbed the stumps of Singh who hit 8 fours and five sixes in his 95.
Former National under-19 leg-spinner Troy Gonsalves took 3-49 and Surat 2-19 for Everest who fell for 88 in their second innings despite 26 from Joseph Perry and 18 from Gonsalves.
At Bourda, GCC completed an innings victory against Transport Sports Club just before 15:00hrs after they took their overnight 359-4 to 514-9 declared.
Sarwan retired out on 203 while ex-Guyana youth opener Jeetendra Sookdeo made 64 and Clevon Hyman 44 as Carl Rambarose took 3-88 and Mark Nicholson 2-99 for Transport.
Transport fell for 144 in their second innings despite 45 from Steven Alves 33, 45 from Rambarose and 15 Shawn Massiah.
Ricardo Jadunauth took 5-49 and Skipper Leon Johnson, bowling off-spin due to a side strain, took 4-37 for GCC as TSC, set 416 to make GCC bat a second time after they fell for 95 in their first innings, crashed to defeat.
The next round of the competition is scheduled for this weekend.
