The MACORP Open started off in brilliant sunshine on Friday as the senior players matched skills with upcoming Juniors on the local circuit. After a short opening ceremony the tournament was opened by MACORP sales Manager Mr Lyndon Bentinck.
In the opening matches 14-year old Junior Aretta Dey, fresh off playing the World Junior Qualifying championships had a surprisingly easy 6-2 6-3 win over a rusty Thi Fernandes in the Ladies Singles draw. In the Men’s Singles encounter Sandeep Chand completed an easy 6-0 6-2 win over Rajesh Ramjattan.
In the Men’s 35 Doubles action, veteran Carlos Adams teamed up with Gilbert Barckoy to win an entertaining match against the father/son combination of Maxie and Imo Fox. Adams and Barckoy played a smart doubles game and capitalised by breaking their opponent’s serve several times during the course of their straight set win. In the first set, Barckoy and Adams won by dominating the key points, winning 6-1 before the Foxes mounted a late challenge before loosing 6-4 in the second set.
In the other Men’s Singles match, Rawle Sue Ho had an easy time against Mindat Lallbeharry winning both sets at love.
Saturday’s matches saw the Juniors competing in the Under 18 categories and there was a major upset as the number two seed Daniel Lopes was toppled by the diminutive but consistent Seanden David-Longe as the match went down to the wire and a deciding tie-break set.
Lopes steamrolled David Longe 6-1 in the first set, but found the going much tougher in the second as Seanden changed strategy and was patient as he frustrated Lopes into errors and took the set 6-4. The decider was a super tie- break which Seanden held his nerve to pull off the upset 10-6 and advance to the next round.
The number one seed Gavin Lewis had no problems disposing of Alex Power in straight sets 6-0 6-0. In the Girls 18, Nicola Ramdyhan and Aretta Dey both had easy straight set wins over Anneasa Grandison and Afruika Gentle respectively.
In the last Junior match for the day Rajesh Ramrattan battled hard to defeat Dominic Fraser 6-2 6-2.
