Ravens and Pacesetters will play for the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Club Championship title this weekend following respective wins emphatically against Macabbees and Scorpions at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall Saturday night.
In the first game, Ravens came from being down 31-32 against Macabbees to win 72-56 after the opposing offence collapsed in the last half. Ravens went on an 18-2 run in the third quarter and there was no turning back for the number one ranked team in Georgetown.
Akeem ‘The Dream’ Kanhai scored 16 points, Yusuf Edghill 14 points, Ryan Stephney 13 points and Ryan Gullen 12 points for Ravens, who won the game in the last half after excellent defence from the Macabbees stifled their offense in the first two quarters.
Yannick Dundas was again the leading scorer for Macabbees with 14 points while Hodayah Stewart contributed 10 points. The team will be disappointed that they could not have prolonged such a spirited effort in the first half of the crucial game.
In the second Final Four game, Pacesetters also won in the final half after Scorpions came right back in the game following an offensive freeze. But eventually, Pacesetters was able to bounce away with a 73-48 points’ win to set up a Grand Finale against Ravens.
Travis ‘The Blurr’ Burnett and Jermaine ‘Jungle’ Hamilton scored 16 points apiece with veteran, Naylon Loncke adding 12 points for Pacesetters. Burnett and Hamilton are forming part of a new offensive choice for coach, Robert ‘Bobby’ Cadogan.
Shelroy Thomas scored 12 points and Desmond Chin 10 points for Scorpions, who came from an 18-29 defecit in the second quarter to trail by two points. However, Pacesetters held on to a 31-28 lead at halftime before Scorpions produced another spark.
In the first five minutes of the third quarter, Scorpions pressed on defence and produced some turnovers that they converted to equalise at 32 points. Pacesetters, with centre Horace Hodges and forward, Royston Siland in foul trouble, added only one point to their halftime score in five minutes of basketball.
Steady ‘travelling’ calls on Burnett also frustrated the Pacesetter offence. However, Hugh Arthur was able to create some space to score back-to-back points that returned some momentum to the Pacesetters unit. They regained the lead at the end of the third quarter and wrapped up the game, outscoring Scorpions 30-10 in the final period for the win.
