…bypass roads, piles and rip-rap works to be done
A dangerous road turn at Hope, East Bank Demerara, which has been slipping into the nearby river, is set for major works. Bids were opened on Tuesday.
According to Senior Engineer of the Ministry of Public Works, Walter Willis, the works will include the building of a two-lane bypass to cater for the smooth flow of traffic; the driving of toe piles and rip-rap works.
Several sections of the East Bank Demerara roadway are under threat especially at the turn at Craig and at Friendship around the DIDCO compound.
Government had started to drive piles to shore up the road but works had to be abandoned after the piles collapsed.
Several sandbags were placed along the west shoulder of the roadway to protect drivers.

At Maria’s Lodge, Essequibo Coast, bids were tendered for the construction of 350 metres of rip-rap sea defense. The Engineer’s Estimate was $159,395,000 with the bids opened including:
At Amersfort, Wakenaam, repairs are being done to 350 meters of sea defence which will be shored up by a rip-rap structure. The Engineer’s Estimate for the project is $155,729,950 with the bids opened including:
At Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, the Ministry of Public Works also tendered for construction of 120 meters of rip-rap sea defense. The Engineer’s Estimate was $77,281,000 while the bids opened were:
