Sarwan’s unbeaten double light up Bourda

Thirty-year-old Test batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan lit up Bourda yesterday with a scintillating unbeaten double century as GCC dominated an innocuous Transport Sports Club attack on the opening day of their Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) two-day first division cricket match.
The free-flowing Sarwan, whose last innings for GCC produced an unbeaten 105 against Everest in October last year, put together 284 for the fourth wicket with National left-hander Vishaul Singh who made 121 as GCC closed on 359-4 replying to Transport’s paltry 95.
Sarwan, who averages over 40 in Tests, First-Class and ODI cricket, shrugged off his omission from the West Indies T20 team to oppose Pakistan in St Lucia later this month and false reports of him being under investigation by the ICC for match-fixing with an entertaining array of shots after he was joined by Singh with GCC on 33-3 in sweltering heat.
Robin Bacchus, Ricardo Jadunauth and Leon Johnson all fell cheaply before Sarwan and Singh took the game away from the visitors on a flat track.
Sarwan and Singh had also featured in a double century stand when they last batted together at this level with Singh making 109 against Everest last October at Bourda.
Sarwan accelerated from a careful start to race to his second consecutive first division century when he clobbered off-spinner Kevin Ross for his 11th boundary, while the 22-year-old Singh drove medium pacer Keon Morris viciously down the ground to reach his 5th century at this level and second in this competition.
Ross, operating with an action which raised eyebrows, did the bulk of the bowling for Transport. He finished with 0-96 from 20 overs but should have had Sarwan caught at long-off and after the right-hander had survived a confident stumping appeal against the spinner.
Singh was eventually caught and bowled by Morris at 317-4 after hitting 14 fours while Sarwan, whose first ‘double’ at this level was
against GYO in 1998, remained unbeaten at the close.
Earlier, teenage left-arm spinner Raj Nanan continued his impress season by taking 4-37 and got support from Sarwan (2-6) and Johnson (2-16) as Transport failed to reach a three-figure total despite 26 from Charwayne McPherson and 25 from Carl Rambharose.
At DCC, new recruit, Berbician Gajanand Singh, the 23-year-old left-handed First-Class batsman, stroked a stylish 111, his first ton for the home team but he got little support with the bat as DCC scored 223 against Everest who were dismissed for 80 in reply. DCC were 34-3 in their second innings at the close.
Eighteen-year-old West Indies under-19 selectee Amir Khan grabbed 4-55 and Christopher Surat (3-68) bowled well for Everest after only Troy Gonsalves (24) had reached 15 when the Camp Road side batted.
Former National under-19 left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun had 4-39 and Omesh Dhaniram 4-11 for DCC who reached 34-3 in their second innings with Singh unbeaten on 27.
At Eve Leary, 18-year-old National T20 player Andre Stoll cracked his maiden first division century (101) after opener Rawle Browne who stroked 70 and Parnell London 28 in a 97-run opening stand for Police who made 308 against Malteenoes who reached 72-2 in reply.
Ex-National under-19 pacer Seon Daniels (2-67), left-arm spinner Damian Vantull (2-46) and leg-spinner Jermaine Joseph (2-39) did the damage with the ball for Malteenoes.
West Indies under-19 selectee Kwame Crosse, leading the side due to the absence of regular Skipper Steven Jacobs who has left to play semi-professional cricket in Trinidad, made 34. Former Guyana under-15 all-rounder Carlos LaRose is unbeaten on 22.
The other scheduled match yesterday between GDF and GNIC was not played due to the unplayable condition of the GDF pitch due to Football.
A GCA official informed that this match will be replayed since the team with the most points at the completion of the tournament will be declared the Champions.
Play on the final day of all three matches is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs today.
