A 42 year-old Timehri man is currently being monitored at the Georgetown Public Hospital because he attempted suicide after hacking his former reputed wife of eight years to death. Twenty-six-year-old Gaitree Narine, called ‘Laleita’ of Alliance Road, Timehri, died almost instantly after she was chopped several times about her body by Parmanand ‘Ramu’ Seepersaud.
This newspaper was told that around 08:00 hours yesterday Narine’s current lover dropped her off by Seeperaud home along with her three children.
Seepersaud’s brother, Seeram Richmond, told this publication that Gaitree would normally send the three children to spend the day with their father as was ordered by the probation officer.
“Every Saturday the children does got to come to collect them money from me brother but I ain’t know wha happen this morning.”
“I see de boy wha Laleita living with come in a car which drop off she and them children, and they all go over at me brother house.”
The man added that he then noticed that the children came over to his house which is located in the same yard but still didn’t pay any mind to the couple in the yard.
“The next thing I hear is like a scuffle in the yard so I seh to meself they just arguing,”
Richmond said that he decided to look out after he heard ‘Laleita’ screaming.
“When I look in de yard I see me brother chopping she and she fall to de ground and he just pick up a bottle a gramoxone and drink it and run and jump in the creek at de back ah de yard.”
Richmond said that he immediately ran to the woman who was lying on the ground but soon realised that there was nothing he could have done for her.
“I see like couple ah she finger get chop off, she get chop straight across she face from like under she neck and one to she back.”
By that time, neighbours were alerted to what had transpired and rushed to the scene. They managed to pull Seepersaud from the trench.
After Seeperaud was pulled from the trench relatives tried giving him milk.
“Dey seh milk does mek dem vomit de poison so we give he milk and he vomit li’l and by then de police come and carry he to the hospital.”
Seepersaud was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was treated and subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Relatives said that it appeared as if ‘Laleita’ had already died.
“When we look at she, she just de panting fuh breath and like five minutes after, she done dead.”
The woman’s body was left in the yard for more than four hours before it was removed by undertakers from the Lyken Funeral Home.
The police have since retrieved a cutlass which they believe was the murder weapon and a bottle of suspected poison.
The troubled life
The news of the woman’s death came as a surprise to many in the community who said that they knew the woman. One relative told this publication that ‘Laleita’ was originally from Clemwood in
the Demerara River where she lived with her husband.
She abandoned her marriage home to be with Seepersaud. “Ramu use to go in Clemwood to work and they see one another and she left and come out to live with he.”
‘Ramu’ and ‘Laleita’ had been living together for approximately eight years.
“We never hear he beat she or anything…but she use to always complain how he does treat she bad…and she just decide to left,”. About a month ago the couple separated but ‘Ramu’ was ordered by the probation officer to pay $4,000 weekly as child support to the children.
‘Ramu’s’ relatives said that they pleaded with ‘Laleita’ to return home but to no avail.
“We use to go and sit down with she and beg she fuh come back home but she always seh we forcing she fuh do wha she aint want do…She just use to drop off the children collect the money.”
This newspaper was also told that despite the fact ‘Laleita’ walked out of her home they never expected such a reaction from ‘Ramu’.
“Dis boy was really quiet but you could never tell wha going through a man’s head…He ain’t look like he could harm a fly.”
Some speculated that the fact that the man who ‘Laleita’ was living with was known to ‘Ramu’ must have been the straw that broke the camel’s back.
