… freed, re-arrested
There was some high drama on Friday at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court, before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, when Muntaz Yassin, called, ‘Joe’52 of 149 Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, and formerly of New Street, Cumberland, East Canje, was arrested, and placed before the courts after being on the run for more than four years.
But almost immediately he had his matter discharged.
Statements were not filed. However, according to some legal minds, Yassin, who was once a money changer, was charged under the old act and thus statements were not required.
He was promptly re-arrested and charged.
He is accused of repeatedly raping his 14-year-old neighbour during 2006 and 2007. According to Prosecutor Corporal Roberto Figueira, between September 1, 2006 and November 3, 2007, at New Street Cumberland, East Canje, Yassin repeatedly had sex with the girl who was under the age of 14 at the time.
Kaieteur News understands that the girl, who is a student of a secondary school in New Amsterdam, lived with her aunt and other siblings next door to the accused.
The girl and other siblings would visit the accused from time to time and do household chores and run a few errands for the accused and would receive various sums of money, nothing more than $200.
During one such visit, when no one was around the accused allegedly locked the child in the house, forced her into his bedroom, locked the door and had forced sex with her. This act was repeated on numerous occasions amidst threats and many promises and inducements of money.
The man had reportedly collected the girl from school on a few occasions telling the teachers that he was her grandfather.
The girl reportedly confided in a teacher who reported the matter. The Schools’ Welfare Department and the police were informed and the girl was taken to the hospital for medical examination.
However, before Yassin could have been arrested he fled the country. He eventually slipped back in and was living at Lusignan. The police were informed about his new hideout and he was subsequently arrested and charged.
When the matter was called in court on Friday it was discharged by the Magistrate because statements were not filed. However, he was immediately re- arrested and charged with the same offence.
He is now out on $110,000 bail and must return to court on April 29.
