– Ramotar
Donald Ramotar, the People’s Progressive Party presidential candidate, yesterday told the first Party’s County Conference held at Cotton Field School, Essequibo Coast, that victory at the upcoming polls depends on hard political work.
Ramotar reportedly said that while the party emerged united, strong and ready from his recent selection by the party’s Central Committee, he will not be complacent in the campaign for the 2011 election.
According to Ramotar, the party could not rely on its achievements alone.
“We will not win on those alone; we have to do the political work. We have to ensure that our groups are functioning.”
Ramotar, widely regarded as a political ideologue and de facto leader of the party since the death of Cheddi and Janet Jagan, told delegates that they need to campaign in non- traditional support bases.
“We have to ensure that all of us go out there, meet with everyone in every area in the traditional PPP areas and in the non-traditional PPP areas” he said.
The PPP traditionally draws the bulk of its support from among East Indians. The main opposition People’s National Congress Reform’s support base comes from among African Guyanese.
In his address President Bharrat Jagdeo sought to shore up Ramotar”s profile as an economist and someone who is intellectually curious.
“You need someone who has the economic skills to craft and lead that vision to keep our country strong and resilient,” said Jagdeo.
Ramotar is the holder of a first degree in economics from the University of Guyana. Jagdeo holds a Masters in Economics from the Russia-based Patrice Lumumba Friendship University.
Ramotar thanked the other three candidates who withdrew from the race, resulting in even greater party unity. Of the trio, only Clement Rohee was present.
Several veteran party members, including Komal Chand and Navin and Indra Chandarpal, were also absent.
