Relatives of executed Newtown resident fear gunmen’s return

As police continue to hunt for the gunmen who executed him, some relatives of slain Newtown resident Brian Chung have expressed fear that the killers may return.
“I didn’t sleep last night (Thursday),” one close relative told Kaieteur News yesterday. “I don’t know who did it and what is the motive.”
Investigators suggest that the 41-year-old Chung, a drug trafficker, was killed by persons with whom he had a recent dispute.
A police release, which described Chung as a food vendor, stated that Chung was at his 79 DaSilva Street residence with a friend around 19:15 hrs on Thursday when two men entered the yard and shot him. Police said that the men exited the yard and fled on a motorcycle.
Chung was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was pronounced dead.
Some reports indicate that the victim was shot once in the head, while other reports state that Chung was shot twice.
Eyewitnesses described the motorcycle as a CG.
No bullet fragments or shells were recovered at the scene, so police were unable to identify the calibre of weapons that the gunmen used. The victim lived in the bottom flat of a two-storey house, while his sister and another female relative occupied the top flat.
Chung, had previous brushes with the law over drug trafficking.
According to a source, Chung and other associates had “a problem”, which led to seven persons being arrested.
Kaieteur News was told that a relative of one of the men vowed that Chung would be taught a lesson.
In November 2010, Brian Chung had implicated three ranks from the Tactical Services Unit in an extortion scheme. It allegedly happened when the ranks carried out a search at Chung’s home and found 303 grammes of marijuana.
The policemen reportedly seized the marijuana and demanded $75,000 from Chung so that he could avoid prosecution.
After the policemen left, Chung reported the matter and a sting operation was set up, in which the serial numbers on the notes in the $75,000 were recorded before being handed over to the police ranks.
It is alleged that the three policemen were intercepted later the same day by senior officers. A quantity of marijuana and the marked bills were allegedly found in their vehicle.
The accused ranks were subsequently remanded to prison on joint charges of demanding money with menace and trafficking in narcotics.
