Minibuses operating on the 42 route (Stabroek/Timehri) relaxed their demands for commuters to pay at least a $20 increase. Tis reduction came yesterday, as government held true to the threats of using the big buses.
Yesterday morning, several of the latter made trips until 10:00 hrs and were expected to resume operations last evening. The buses were used in especially the heavily populated Grove/Diamond areas.
According to Transportation Minister, Robeson Benn, the indications are that minibuses have reverted to charging the old fares.
“Yes, we are going out tonight (last evening) again. We are still open to talks. It seems as if they are charging the old prices.”
A number of East Bank Demerara minibus operators defied Government’s call not to increase fares until the gas prices pass the $1,000 per gallon mark.
On Wednesday, almost 200 operators took their vehicles to the parking lot of Providence Stadium, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded.
Passengers up to Grove were told to pay $120 or no travel. The price to Timehri had moved from $260 to $300, a hefty hike for many.
Minister of Trade, Manniram Prashad, and Benn were both of the opinion that the fares should not be raised since gas prices remained manageable. Recently, government had slashed the excise tax on gas from 30 per cent to 20 per cent in an attempt to contain prices. Prices for crude oil has risen to record level within recent days amidst turmoil in a number of major oil producing countries including Libya.
Operators, in justifying their fare hikes on East Bank Demerara, cited also the rising cost of spares as the reasons for their decision to raise the fares.
The decision to use the big buses to bust the increase was met with mixed reactions with operators saying that move could not last “forever”.
