The services of the West Demerara Regional Hospital were literally taken out into the community yesterday as part of Region Three’s observance of World Health Day.
It took on the form of a mini-health exhibition at the Phoenix Park Market tarmac, which not only served to highlight the variety of services, but there were relevant health care providers on hand to attend to those who sought medical attention.
There were many school students in attendance, which came as a result of collaboration with the Region Three Education Department, according to Regional Health Officer, Dr Ravindranauth Persaud.
“Our children are the future of the country and it is for this reason that we are targeting our school children, specifically our fourth and fifth form students, from both Government and Private Schools.”
According to Nurse Jean Bhagmania, one of the Coordinators of the event, the exhibition was designed to reach out to the public in order to raise awareness that extensive health care is available within the region.
The West Demerara Regional Hospital as well as the Leonora Diagnostic Centre, she said, are very much equipped to offer services inclusive of blood pressure testing, HIV and BMI testing, Maternal and Child Health care, physiotherapy, as well as dental and eye services among others.
“Everything that we offer within the hospital setting we are offering here at no cost…We are doing this so that people know that they do not have to go to Georgetown for these services because we have them right here in Region three,” Nurse Bhagmania noted.
