Dear Editor,
The government wants to control every organistion including the City Council. They want to be in charge of every segment of society. This was confirmed by the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Mr. Kellawan Lall, at a meeting with the press, last week.
Mr. Hamilton Green was right when he said a few years ago, that this government wants hegemony; they want it all. They will go to any length to gain control.
At that meeting, the Minister said that he has the right to recruit a Town Clerk and other senior officers for the council.
This seems quite strange to me because I have checked and in no other of the over 65 municipalities or neighbourhood democratic councils is this happening. Why only Georgetown? All through the years council has been finding its own workers.
If the council has its own system to get its own staff then the council should be allowed to recruit, interview and employ its own employees.
I am not familiar with the laws, but it is wrong for the government to want to put their own people in the council because the council has to work with these people not the government. Can anyone tell the government who to employ? No!
What’s the sudden fuss about the government recruiting staff for the council? The only answer is that this is an election year and the government must have total domination of Georgetown. I hope that Guyanese are taking note of what is happening in the capita.
