Cops still awaiting legal advice on ‘vigilante’ killing

Police are still awaiting advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on whether to lay charges in the alleged vigilante-style killing of East Ruimveldt resident, Colin Clement Davis.
A senior police official said that a report on the case was sent to the office of the DPP last week.
Davis, of Avocado Square, East Ruimveldt, was clubbed to death in a Mandela Avenue yard late last month. The incident occurred a short distance from Davis’ home.
Police said an occupant of the property admitted that he had struck the 48-year-old Davis with a length of wood after catching Davis attempting to break into the house.
Investigators had recovered the alleged weapon as well as a crowbar from the scene.
The man reportedly told investigators that he was in the house when he heard a noise in the yard. He then went outside and spotted the suspected thief in the yard. The resident reportedly then dealt the intruder several blows about the body and called the police after the man had collapsed.
He was detained but released while police sought legal advice on the matter.
Police reportedly found what appeared to be signs of forced entry.
Kaieteur News understands that police had received at least four recent reports about burglars breaking into the Lot 759 property.
Police sources said that checks on Davis’ background suggested that he did not have a criminal past.
Davis’ body was not identified until about two days later by his wife, June Davis, who viewed the remains at the Georgetown Hospital Mortuary.
Relatives and neighbours who spoke with Kaieteur News insist that he was no criminal.
One woman said that Davis did odd-jobs in the community and had been entering her home for some ten years without stealing anything. Another neighbour said that the most she knows Davis would do is “raid the fruit trees.”
