Police on the East Coast of Demerara are faced with another break and enter at yet another post office in the Division.
This newspaper was told that some time during the course of Tuesday night thieves broke into the Beterverwagting Post office after gaining entry through a window at the southwestern side of the building.
According to Divisional Commander Gavin Primo, investigations revealed that the perpetrators torched their way into a safe which was in the building and removed a quantity of cash.
A source form the post office corporation told this publication that close to $4 M was taken from the safe. When this newspaper visited the location yesterday the staff was seen sitting outside of the building while police ranks were carrying out their investigations. Auditors from the post office were also present at the location yesterday.
One staff member told this publication that they turned up for duty around 07:30 hours yesterday and upon arrival noticed that the lock was broken and the door open. The police were immediately informed.
Up to press time yesterday no one was arrested. As of yesterday services at the post office were suspended until further notice.
Meanwhile people who live near the post office told this publication that they did not see or hear anything strange during the night.
Only Sunday last the Clonbrook Post Office was also broken into.
