Dear Editor,
It is being highly rumoured that Freddie Kissoon’s column is to be discontinued.
Mr. Editor, I have met and socialized with Mr. Glen Lall on more than one occasion and I always admire his down to earth attitude with a kind of “Clint Eastwood” aloofness, but just discernable; his smile is a winner and every time I met him I always tell my wife that no matter what one thinks of him, his smile elevates his obvious self assurance.
Mr. Lall is also an excellent businessman, as can be seen from the success of KaieteurNews and other ventures he has being a part of. To be truthful, sometimes in life, you meet an individual whose karma works for them in more ways than one, and Mr. Editor, Mr. Lall is such a person; every time I am in his company , I see the karma working at ground level, to stand him a head above many others.
Mr. Lall has shown, as publisher of Kaieteur News, the openness to accommodate opinions from all the political spectra in Guyana, and for that, he is to be congratulated.
However, if the Freddie Kissoon column is terminated, it will not only be bad for business, but it would send the wrong signal to the reading public and Mr. Editor, it would seem as if press freedom is being infringed.
On top of all that is the personal relationship of Mr. Lall to Mr. Ramotar, the presidential candidate for the PPP, which ignorant persons might perceive as sinister in this particular case. Mr. Editor, you will be quite aware that I have been a vocal critic of Freddie Kissoon and the sheer nonsense he writes, almost on a daily basis is crude, bombastic and downright filled with lies and innuendos; for Kissoon to condemn the East Indian race as guilty of things which he invents is the most atrocious nonsense anyone can come up with.
Nevertheless, I have to appeal to Kaieteur News to allow Kissoon’s column to continue because the bottom line has to be the freedom in Guyana to speak one’s mind in a free speech environment which Kaieteur News has adhered to, all its journalistic life. One would only expect interference in journalistic independence in the state run media like the Chronicle, but Kaieteur News has a good reputation to uphold and at this point in time, Kissoon’s column should be given consideration on its publication.
Mr. Editor, I am confident that the personal attributes which I mentioned above about Glen Lall will play a major role in his ultimate decision on this issue, and I would accept any decision he makes as the right thing because, whatever the public might think, there are things which transpired at Kaieteur News which we would not be aware of and which are factors in any decision he might come to. I am sure that Mr. Lall’s self assurance in himself and his judgement will guide him to the correct consideration on this matter.
