It was a night of upsets when the two semi-final matches in the 13th Mayor’s Cup Football competition concluded at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground, Sunday evening last.
In the first match, Sunburst Camptown FC, on the back of goals off the boot of Reshawn Sandiford in the 69th minute and Nigel Codrington in the 73rd, sent Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United packing 2-0, moments before a Vurlon Mills’ double in the 15th and 35th minutes of Fruta Conquerors put a damper to Pele’s chances of advancing. Marvin Joseph managed to narrow the loss when he tucked in a 76th minutes success but the time proved insufficient for Pele to pull the proverbial ‘rabbit out of the hat.’
Alpha, using the match as practice for the impending Caribbean Football Union (CFU) championships later this month, went into the match the clear favourites and the players immediately went into attacking mode. They attempted to distinguish themselves from their adversaries but apparently never catered for the determination of the Camptown boys whose game plan and application was of such that the first half ended with the score leveled at nil all. Whether it was because of the opposition’s savvy or their own shortcomings, Alpha’s game fell apart and several of their players flunked easy chances; Shawn Bishop blundered three, while Dwain Jacobs allowed an opportunity to go a begging. Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams was also guilty of tardy play and failed to capitalize on an easy chance. On the contrary, Sandiford and Codrington showed them how it should have been done. The finals will be staged at the same venue on April 25 when Fruta Conquerors and Sunburst Camptown go head to head for the championship trophy and one million dollars. The runners up take home five hundred thousand dollars. Pele and Alpha will battle in the third place playoff.
Meanwhile, Vernon Mills’ double proved to be sufficient when Fruta Conquerors defeated Pele. Mills literally dominated the match and it seemed as though he was simply unstoppable. The margin of victory for his team should have been wider but for the fact the referee cited the dapper player for off side on several occasions when he was unchallenged going to the opposition’s goal.
Some of the calls appeared extremely close and caused Conquerors supporters to question their authenticity. Konata Manning’s free kick attempt was the closest by the opposition to score, but his curved shot missed the opposition’s goal by mere inches. Otherwise, Conquerors, and more specifically Mills, retained control up to the final whistle.
