Plans to build a security hut at the Canadian High Commission yesterday came to a screeching halt as workers from the Ministry of Public Works and Communication descended and removed several steel encased concrete poles that were erected on the road reserve.
The workers arrived on scene shortly after noon and removed one of the poles but the Canadians intervened and managed to pause the destruction for a short while.
They had attempted to have the matter settled amicably through an intervention from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs but this was to no avail.
This newspaper understands that the architect for the facility is to be blamed as he did not secure the necessary approval to build on what was described to be road reserves.
The workers from the Ministry waited for a bit but when no word came from their superiors rescinding the original instructions, they proceeded to cut the remaining poles.
Using a cutting torch, one of the workers cut around the base of the poles that were erected and an excavator was used to topple them.
