Up to press time yesterday police were trying to ascertain the identity of a man who was shot and killed at ‘B’ Field Sophia.
Reports are that the man who is of African descent was shot some time around 02:00 hours yesterday. This newspaper was told that persons in the area were awakened after dogs were heard barking.
Residents said that the man was seen trying to enter a house through a window. The homeowner was said to be hospitalized. There are reports that the residents immediately alerted the police since they were all aware that the homeowner was away.
According to reports that man was then confronted by police who responded promptly. “The same time the police pull up de man de coming back through a window and like he go to he waist and de police just shoot.”
There are also conflicting reports that the man was involved in a conversation with the police. One source told this publication that the man after being caught told residents that he was a relative of the house owner.
“He tell people de owner fuh de house send he to look after de place but it was strange that he deh by a window and the back and front door lock up…But I really ain’t know how he get shoot…da part I can’t say”.
This newspaper was told that the man was removed from the location by the police and was reportedly taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital mortuary.
Meanwhile, according to an official police statement on the matter, members of a police patrol responded to a report received that a man had broken into a house at ‘B Field, Sophia. Upon arrival at the scene the police called for the man to come out, whereupon the man rushed menacingly towards the police with an object in his hand causing the police to resort to the use of force and he was shot.
The police recovered an ice pick and a screw driver from the unidentified man who was pronounced dead on arrival at he hospital. The body is at the Lyken Funeral Parlour.
