Who will advance to the grand finale and third place playoff of the Mayor’s Cup Football championship is anyone’s guess. But fans can witness the passage of the teams tonight when four of the leading football clubs in the country go into action at the Georgetown Football Club ground, Bourda this evening.
The action opens with Alpha, Guyana’s number one club, currently preparing for the Caribbean Football Union championship, coming up against Camptown in the curtain raiser at 6:00pm. This will be followed by the nightcap between Pele and Fruta Conquerors at 8:00pm.
Alpha have had excellent success and will look to maintain that as they head to much bigger things in the CFU event in two weeks time. Shawn Bishop, Quincy Madramootoo, Kelvin McKenzie, Dwain Jacobs, Anthony Abrams, Dwight Peters and skipper Howard Lowe, all who have done national duty for Guyana, are a potent force to reckon with and Camptown will be staring down the barrel of a fully load cannon.
Camptown will hope to turn the Alpha attack into a damp squib, but that will take some doing and it will rest squarely on the shoulders of Nigel Codrington, Troy Prescod, Oswald Cornette, Reshawn Sandiford, Jamal Greaves and Orlando Gilgeous to turn back their challenge.
Pele, led by Konata Manning, Travis Grant, Solomon Austin, Marvin Joseph, Stellon David, Sean Johnson and Sheldon Holder will look to play as a unit and book their spot in the final. These players have the experience and talent as they have shown in the past and will look to halt the march of Conquerors.
The Tucville based side will look to Trevon Lythcott, Dellon Williams, Jolyon Harry, Eon Alleyne, Colin Edwards, Lester Peters and Jomo Hinds to make the charge against Pele. Knowing the ability of both teams, fans can expect a highly competitive encounter.
The final of the Mayor’s Cup is set for Easter
Monday, April 25 along with the third place playoff at the GFC ground.
The teams are competing for a first prize of one million dollars while the runners up cart off half that amount. The third and fourth place finishers receive two hundred thousand and one hundred thousand dollars respectively.
