Tomorrow’s games will provide answers as four teams aspire
It seems like only yesterday but in fact two long years have passed since Pele FC defeated Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United 4 -2 on penalty kicks to add the prestigious Mayor’s Cup Trophy to their bulging collection. Since then the losing team has notched up numerous prestigious accolades and the management is optimistic of adding this year’s title to their bulging collection.
Once again, these two teams are on a collision course but each must first cross separate hurdles if they are to clash for part two of the war. Alpha United must defeat Camptown FC, while Pele will have to defeat Fruta Conquerors if there should be a replication of that thrilling match up.
The four teams will be in action on Sunday night to determine who will challenge who for the trophy, one million dollars and of course, bragging rights. With the stakes so high one could just envisage the fierce rivalry that is bound to unfold.
Alpha United has had phenomenal successes on the field and has distinguished itself as one of the better, if not the best units locally. Coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover is riding high and is exuding confidence that his boys will get past Camptown FC and then go on to avenge the defeat suffered at the boots of Pele.
When contacted yesterday afternoon just before the team departed for practice sessions Dover confided that he is backing his boys to go all the way. He boasted that his strikers Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams, Dwian Jacobs and Dwight Peters are the best local footballers in that position and are rearing to go.
The Alpha coach further intimated that his defence lineup is capable of correcting any errors made by his strikers. Indeed with such stars like Shawn Bishop, Quincy Madramootoo and Abassi McPherson, ‘The Hammers’ would obviously be starting as the favourites. “The Alpha squad is loaded with talent and I could assure you that we will win the Mayor’s Cup this year,” pronounced Dover.
While Dover’s pronouncements ought not to be taken lightly, one cannot just simply write off the Camptown team. It has won this competition once, so naturally, the boys would want to enjoy such feelings again. Nigel Codrington is no slouch and his dexterity and adroitness can be decisive in the outcome of the match. He could depend on support from Rishawn Sandiford and Devon Forde. This potent strike crew could very well upset the Alpha team. Sandiford was very guarded when asked to predict an outcome. “All I can say is that the game would be very competitive; Alpha is a good team and are technically sound but so too is Camptown so I see a very good game for tomorrow night,” he said.
Pele FC enters the game knowing that Conquerors FC is not a team to be taken lightly. They will remember oh so well the loss they suffered to this very team when Vernon Mills’ 51st minute success sealed the issue in the Guyana Football Association’s Cellink Plus 2009 Primier League championships at the Tucville Ground. Pele would back its chances of advancing on their capable striker, Travis Grant, Renford Coleridge and Marvin Joseph not to mention their astute midfielder, Konata Manning. Then there is Mervyn Liverpool another capable defence play to support Solomon Austin.
The opposition would obviously miss Manessah Primo, whose prowess has notched up many a win for the Conquerors. Nevertheless, they will be fielding Trevon Lythcott a strong defender who could depend on staunch support from fellow defender Neville Stanton, while Mustapha Haqq and Jolyon Harry would be manning the midfield position.
On paper all four teams look good. Football fans are hoping that the respective players come prepared for a tough game tomorrow night. If they do a fierce contest is envisaged setting the stage for a mouthwatering final soon afterwards.
