The health of Stabroek Bazaar vendors is in danger due to the effects of poor drainage in the facility.
Vendors, including Ms. Evelyn Persaud, stated that the poor drainage in the Bazaar has resulted in some areas being flooded. The water isn’t going anywhere. The woman stated that the unpleasant scent of the water has caused many to lose their customers and the backlogged water has caused her to lose all of hers.
This is so because she wasn’t fortunate enough to have her stall at the front of the bazaar; it’s at the back and it is impossible for customers to navigate through the nasty water to get to her.
The woman stated that the water, which has been affecting her since last year August, is a nuisance. It is not healthy for the fresh greens which she sells to be around these conditions. The water is so stagnant that it is a breeding place for ring worms and mosquitoes, she stated. There is no telling what other diseases are borne there, he added.
Mr. Bheri Ramraj, who has been conducting his grocery business there for many years, says that the already substandard drainage network in the Bazaar has been clogged with garbage for some time now.
The man grieved over the situation and was upset because every month he pays his $6,500 in stall fees.
The man said that he has nothing against the council but since he is paying his fees, he expects the council to perform their duties.
Mr. Ramraj and Ms. Nalini Singh, who also have a stall, stated that sometimes they try to help themselves by cleaning their part of the drain but when they do, garbage from stalls before them flow down and clogs back the drains.
Neither Public Relations Officer for the City Council, Mr. Royston King, nor the Clerk of Markets, Mr. Schuler Griffith, could be reached for a comment.
