Dear Editor,
With General Elections closely approaching, many anti government supporters who have their own axes to grind will certainly put a blind eye to development in Berbice.
The PPP/C Government has made significant contributions to Berbice in all towns and villages since 1992.
Some of their achievements are: –
* The Berbice River Bridge, which provides easy access for Berbician traversing to and from Georgetown.
* The Skeldon Sugar Factory, designed to boost sugar production.
* The University of Guyana, Berbice Campus, offering students in Berbice tertiary level education.
* The Upper Corentyne Technical Institute, offering students craft and trade courses. Years ago students had to travel to the New Amsterdam Technical Institute daily.
* The Port Mourant Ophthalmology Centre and New Amsterdam Hospital are providing adequate eye and health care for residents.
* The newly commissioned Port Mourant Market, providing convenient shopping.
* The establishment of wells and water treatment plants at Corriverton, New Amsterdam and on the Corentyne Coast.
* Installation of street lights across major towns and villages in Berbice.
* The Corentyne Highway from New Amsterdam to Crabwood Creek was resurfaced and modernised.
* The development of housing schemes in many areas across Berbice – such as Ankerville, No 76 Village and Tain.
* The construction of bridges, sluices and excavation of canals to boost farming in the agricultural communities of Crabwood Creek, No 52-74, Black Bush Polder and other areas.
These developments are too many to mention, but the fact remains that residents’ livelihood and comfort were improved. Berbicians must take a good recap of the past and compare to the present and make a fair evaluation as to where we were before 1992 and where we are at present.
