Following the pleas of a terrorised Linden family, highlighted in this newspaper under the caption “Family flees Linden in fear of wanted gunman” on Wednesday, last, the Guyana Police Force deployed an additional team of Anti-Crime ranks from the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) to Linden yesterday.
Police recently issued a wanted bulletin for Orlando Thom who they want to question in connection with an alleged kidnapping. As recent as last Monday, Thom, a former national swimming champion, was fingered in the attack on a New England family during which a vehicle was damaged by a bullet fired from a weapon he was allegedly carrying.
Thom has repeatedly managed to elude capture and this had led to increased fear among Linden residents and his alleged intended targets.
According to a statement from the Police Force, the organisation has “taken cognisance of the concerns of members of the Linden community as expressed in an article published in the Kaieteur News, and the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) has been dispatched to Linden as part of intensified efforts to deal with criminal activities including the apprehension of Orlando Thom”.
Last year police from the city captured Colin Jones, who escaped from the Providence Police Station and was hiding out in the mining town for almost a year.
Jones had been charged in connection with the July 17, 2009 fire that destroyed the Health Ministry building.
Following his capture Jones was charged with murders as well as attacks on police stations.
