Defending Champions, Faculty of Technology and the combined Faculties of Natural Sciences and Health Sciences played to a 2-2 stalemate when the University of Guyana Inter-Faculty Football Competition entered its semi-finals stage at the Georgetown Football Club ground Wednesday evening last. By virtue of the stalemate, the defending champions, who only needed a draw to qualify for the semis, progresses to the next stage while Faculties of Natural Sciences and Health Sciences are booted out of the competition.
Unlike the game against UGBC when they played with only Seven (7) players, the combined sciences now had a full compliment and showed more purpose as they made several forays into their opponents penalty area.
After 17 minutes they were away, while five minutes the winners found the mark again to send Technology two under. Fortunes seesawed and the half ended two-nil (2/0) in favour of the combined sciences.
Technology started the game at an advantage, needing to secure only a draw to qualify for the semis. The Combined Sciences, who had earlier suffered an 11-0 defeat to University of Guyana, Berbice Campus (UGBC) was in a must win situation and even so, had to liquidate that 11-nil deficit to stay alive in the competition. Naturally, the drawn decision put paid to their hopes of advancing.
The tournament continued yesterday with two semi –finals matches.
In the first, UGBC opposed Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry while the second match saw Faculty of Social Sciences/School of Earth and Environmental Studies playing defending champions Faculty of Technology.
