Magistrate Ann Mc Clennan yesterday dismissed charges against six men who were accused of being part of a gang responsible for the high profile $17.2 million GuySuCo payroll heist at Stanleytown in November 2008.
Charged were Robert Darr, 39, of Public Road Mc Doom, East Bank Demerara; Paul Stephenson, 27, also of Public Road Mc Doom; Lloyd Jones, 32, of Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara; Dennis Williams, called “Anaconda”; Aldrhen Adonis, 29, of Grove Housing Scheme; Jermaine Todd and John Ross.
The men were accused of robbing Budnarine Sawh of $17.2 million cash, the property of GuySuCo. Further, it was alleged that they also robbed D. Sundat, Phillip Rampersaud, Wade, Olric Taylor and
Phillip Haynes of two cellular phones, a quantity of cash, two 12-gauge shotguns and a quantity of cartridges, a .38 revolver – BBY8456 — and a motor van worth $4.2 million, belonging to the Guyana Employment Bureau (GEB) Security Service. The robbery occurred on November 6, 2008.
Attorney at law Randolph Kirton represented Darr, Stephenson, Jones, Ross and Todd. Williams and Adonis were unrepresented. Lawrence Kissoon prosecuted the matter.
Yesterday the magistrate found that the charges against the men could not be proven by the prosecution.
Further, the magistrate said that she used her judicial conscience when she did not allow the caution statements to be admitted into evidence.
The matter had started November 2008, and a number of policemen and a few civilians were called to give evidence.
Four GEB security guards were escorting the GuySuCo payroll when it was hijacked by an armed gang on the Stanleytown Public Road. Two suspected gang members, Leon Dundas, of Punt Trench Dam, Albouystown and Eric Williams, of Fyrish, Corentyne, were killed during a shootout with the lawmen, while others suspected to have been involved were held by police after an extensive land and river operation.
