… Treason PI continues
The preliminary inquiry (PI) in the treason case involving the trio, Major Bruce Munroe, his wife Carol-Ann Munroe and reserve officer Leonard Wharton continued yesterday before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Treason is a capital offence which is not bailable.
The lawyers Nigel Hughes, Gregory Gaskin and George Thomas were there.
Director of Public Prosecution Shalimar Ali Hack who is prosecuting in the case continued the examination of the chief witness, Quincy Critchlow.
At the conclusion of yesterday’s hearing the matter was fixed for continuation on April 11. On the last occasion as a result of certain evidence Critchlow was relating, the three accused started to chuckle among themselves.
During that hearing, Critchlow stood in the witness box and avoid making eye contact with the three accused for the entire proceedings.
Carlon-Ann Munroe along with her husband Bruce Munroe who is a serving Major in the Guyana Defence Force and reserve officer Leonard Wharton were charged last December with plotting to depose the President and Government of Guyana, between December 1, 2009 and December 16, 2010.
At the initial stage of the allegation persons were speculating that the treason charge was linked to the fire that destroyed the Ministry of Health building on Brickdam.
The treason accused lawyers had noted that the dates of the charge could not stand up to such speculation, since the Ministry of Health fire happened several months before.
The counsel opined that prosecutors have an uphill task to prove their case, and that their clients are confident that what they know the police have against them does not amount to a conviction.
The last persons to be slapped with treason charges were Mark Benschop and Philip Bynoe. Benschop has since been released from prison where he spent five years while Bynoe was never brought to court although charged.
The charging of the trio with treason now totals up to five persons who have been charged and prosecuted by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP)-led administration since 1992.
Carol-Ann Munroe is also the first woman, of the lot, to have been charged with treason. (Tiffany Bowen)
