Bids were opened for the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development on Tuesday at the National Procurement and Tender Administration for the final closure of the Le Repentir Dumpsite for which Engineer’s Estimate should cost $74,999,450 and the bids submitted are:
Bidders Amount
H Persaud & Company Limited $82, 704, 058
BK International Inc $72, 696, 000
Pooran Brothers Inc $64, 473, 700
VB New Approach General Construction Ltd $ 69, 898, 779
The subject Minister, Kellawan Lall, during a press briefing yesterday told media operatives that while he was not fully aware of the details of the project, it includes the fencing of the dumpsite as well as the installation of lighting and security.
He said that they will also have to construct a road and may have to reopen some of the pits.
The troublesome dumpsite has been a source of problems for years especially when it erupts in fire.
It was recently reported that the plans to make the old Le Repentir dumpsite an environmentally friendly and health safety area, are currently underway.
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has fully funded this solid waste disposal project at a cost of US$18M.
Senior Engineer of the Ministry of Public Works and Chairman of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), Walter Willis, had stated that there is about 60,000 cubic metres of waste that is left to be removed from the site.
Works to begin capping the area with clay will be initiated after that.
Willis said that when this is completed there will also be vent pipes installed so that the gases can be released into the air. The same technique that was previously used on ‘cell 1’ and ‘cell 2’ will be used once again, he said.
The duration of this project is expected to be three months.
During the “pre-bid meeting” persons who were interested in bidding for the contract were given a tour on the site so that they could have a “feel” of exactly what the job would require.
The Senior Engineer also stated that there is about 450 metres of road from Cemetery Road that runs towards the Mandela Avenue, which is referred to as “the extension of Broad Street”.
That is also catered for works to be implemented upon at a cost of $75M, also fully funded by the IDB.
