With a recent injection of $40million from the Government which was supported by substantial pledges from GT&T and other corporate entities, the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club seems set to extend its fortunes with an anticipated bumper opening Meeting on Sunday, at the South Dakota Circuit.
According to President of the Club Raj Boodhoo, the recent repaving of the Circuit, the renovation of the club house and the upgrading of the road leading to the venue from the Soesdyke / Linden Highway will certainly lend to a more accommodating atmosphere for motor racing fans.
“To add to all the infrastructural works that we’ve done recently, the expected improvement in lap times and the diligent preparations of the competitors should combine to make the day of racing one that Guyanese and visitors should not miss,” Boodhoo told this newspaper.
He added that most of the country’s top drivers and riders are expected to take to the starting line and among the names listed are Kevin Jeffrey, Andrew King, Paul Vieira, Shawn King, Mark Vieira, Syed Hassan, Kemal Seebarran for the cars, while Stephen Vieira, Maurice Menezes and Carlos Rodrigues will be battling for supremacy in the Superbike category.
The full details of the programme will be published in a subsequent issue.
