As police on the East Coast of Demerara continue their investigation into the alleged car theft involving an employee of the Licence Revenue Office (LRO), they have made one arrest. This newspaper was told that the man under whose house the vehicle was found was taken into police custody on Monday.
However searches at the LRO employee’s house came up empty. This newspaper was also told that a female associate of the man is also being sought by the police. Kaieteur News understands the woman is also employed at the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).
Ever since the incident, both the woman and the man have not showed up for work.
Sources close to the probe said that their investigations are leading them to several other instances of cars going missing.
There are reports that the police may have cracked a ring which was operating at the LRO office where cars were being stolen, sold and new registration made. On Wednesday morning last, after returning to his Atlantic Gardens home, Zamar Alli Hussain noticed that the Toyota Allion which was parked on his parapet was gone. The matter was immediately reported to the Sparendaam Police Station.
On Thursday after an advertisement was placed on the television, Hussain received a call saying that his car was parked under a house in Meadow Bank.
Initially when he arrived at the location, Hussain was told that the car which was covered under the house was a Premio and not an Allion.
“We decided to take off the cover and then we see it was the Allion…The man who was at the house said that the car belonged to his friend who worked at the Licence (Revenue) Office.”
Hussain said that when he contacted the GRA employee, the man told him that the car was bought in Suriname and only needed to be registered.
“He tell we that he didn’t know who he was talking to. Is when he realize that I was the owner of the car then he say he want to return the car and settle the story.”
The car has since been lodged at the Sparendaam Police Station as investigations continue.
