Bartica ‘A’ and South Essequibo will clash in what is expected to be an exciting final of the Carib and D&C promotions twenty/20 cricket competition after recording victories in their respective semifinal matches last weekend at the Bartica Community Centre ground.
In the first semifinal, Bartica ‘A’ defeated Wakenaam/Leguan by 3 wickets. The visitors batted first after winning the toss in front of a large and colourful crowd and scored 122 all out in 19.4 overs.
Essequibo wicketkeeper batsman Wayne Osborne slammed 32 which included two massive sixes and two sweetly timed fours and got support from Trevor Whyte, who made 29 (3×6,1×4) and skipper Nazeer Mohamed 16. Medium pacer Rupesh Motilall took 3-23 (hat-trick) while left arm spinner Andrew Wong (2-17), pacer Garfield Morris (2-16) and Kevin Federicks (2-26) supported well.
Bartica ‘A’ in reply found themselves in trouble at 18-2 after 5 over as the visitors opted for a pace/spin combination. Sastri Mangal and Mahase Richards then posted 40 for the 3rd wicket stand as the host fought themselves back into the contest.
Mangal hit two sixes and three fours in a top score of 34 while Richards slammed a quick fire. 21 (2×6,2×4). The host then encountered a few nervous moments before they eventually won the match in 18 overs ending on 124-7. Arjune Jagroo (15) and Robert Moore (15) were the next best scorers as Wayne Osborne picket up 2-31, while there was one wicket each for Nazeer Mohamed, Imran Khan, Hackumchand Savitir and Ricardo Adams.
In the second semifinal, South overcame North Essequibo by 26 runs. South took first strike and posted 140 all out in 20 overs. Ian Gonsalves and national U-19 player Anthony Adams made 23 each, while Dillon Heyliger contributed 21 as Vishwanauth Lall and Keron Sewnarine took two wickets each for North who were bowled out in the final over for 114. Rajiv Manichand was their leading run scorer with 34 (3×4,1×6) while Suraj Sookdeo assisted with 26 (3×4).
Former national U-19 player Dillon Heyliger and left arm spinner Anthony Adams claimed three wickets for 13 and 19 runs respectively and Royan Federicks bagged 2-15 for the victors.
Meanwhile, South got the better of Central Essequibo by 8 runs in the last quarterfinal game. South took first turn at the crease and mustered 108-7 after the game was reduced to 15 overs due to a late start. Anthony Adams slammed five sixes and one four in a top score of 39 while Royan Federicks 23 (3×4) and Norman Federicks 20 (2×4,1×6) also batted well. Offspinner Kholraj Persaud bagged 4-25 for Central who managed 100-8 off their allotted overs. Former national U-19 player Yougeshwar Lall led with 32 (4×4), while Narendra Madholall and Latchman Rohit supported with 14 each as Dillon Heyliger, Ian Gonsalves and Anthony Adams claimed two wickets each for the winners.
South Essequibo and Bartica ‘A’ will now clash in the final, while Wakenaam/Leguan and North Essequibo will face off in the 3rd/4th place play off on Saturday. (Zaheer Mohamed)
