– 15 arrested
Police on the West Coast of Demerara arrested 15 pupils from the Queenstown Secondary School in Georgetown after they invaded Leonora Secondary on the West Coast of Demerara, to attack one of the students there.
Police said that the arrested students were armed with knives and other sharp weapons and created panic with the brazen intrusion, sending both students and teachers scurrying for safety.
However by late last night they were released into the custody of their parents after giving detailed statements to investigators.
This newspaper understands that the episode has its origin in an altercation between two students of the Leonora Secondary School sometime last week.
One of the students allegedly told his cousin, who attends the Queenstown Secondary School, about the incident and together they vowed to get even with the other party.
The Queenstown Secondary School student gathered up his friends and according to reports, they hired a bus and ‘went across the River’ in search of their prey on Monday.
However the student must have sensed trouble and stayed away from school that day.
Yesterday, the crew from the city hired another bus and returned to the West Coast of Demerara where they invaded the Leonora Secondary, creating havoc in the process.
This newspaper was told that swift action by the police, who were informed about the attack, resulted in the arrest of the teenagers from the city who were caught on the premises of the West Coast institution.
The incident is a stark reminder of the lengths that students will go to perpetrate violence in the school system.
A senior police official on the West Coast of Demerara has indicated that charges will certainly be laid.
