What can be seen as a major ‘foul up’ by the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) has left the two Guyanese female amateur boxers, Carol Ann Bess and Theresa London, extremely upset and Guyana Amateur Boxing Association officials fuming after the news that they will not attend the Junior championship in Turkey.
GABA President Steve Ninvalle confirmed that the trip is off and gave details of the chain of events leading up to this disclosure. AIBA informed that the Guyanese pair was not registered and could not attend the event as a consequence.
However, a string of emails between AIBA official Marley Flores, Ninvalle and Sean Richmond, the GABA Secretary, which Kaieteur Sport was privy to, along with a complete flight itinerary tell a completely different story.
The flight itinerary send by AIBA indicates that the pair was set to travel on Caribbean Airlines flight BW 0522 on Sunday April 10 to Trinidad where they were to connect to LIAT flight number LI 0771 to Curacao for another connecting flight to Holland then to Turkey.
The string of emails requesting various information including signed parental consent was shown to this newspaper. This GABA executive would have been familiar with the process of registration having sent two boxers to a similar event in Barbados last year and it is very strange that after all was done they are told the fighters are not registered.
Ninvalle stated that they have been in contact with AIBA and have complied with every request and is at a loss as to how they could not be registered after following the process to the letter.
He indicated that he wrote to AIBA President Dr. Wu seeking information and expressing his disappointment of how the matter has been handled. Dr. Wu however indicated his regrets but held firm that the registration period was past and nothing could be done at this time.
Ninvalle pointed out that information was also dispatched to them by Flores indicating that the boxer’s visas were to be collected on arrival in Turkey after it had been approved.
An upset and disappointed Ninvalle disclosed that he informed the boxers and their parents of the developments and charged them not to let this disappointment hamper their forward thrust, but rather continue to prepare for several other programmes set for during this year.
Guyana is due to host the Caribbean championship before August and several countries have indicated their participation, but have until the end of April to officially confirm so that GABA can put final systems in place. The two young ladies and several others along with their male counterparts will then get the opportunity to display their skills and earn glory at home against their regional counterparts for starters.
