After swindling countless young ladies of their monies by pretending to be in a position to hire them or land them a job in the city, the perpetrator known as “Troy” was caught and taken into police custody at the Timheri Police Station yesterday.
The police, in collaboration with some of the young ladies, organised a sting operation and apprehended the swindler at his home in Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara.
He and his wife were arrested.
“Now we know this man is a security guard! And his wife use to act as he secretary on the phone when we call. He even ask one of the girls for sex when he meet she,” one woman said.
“He tell we he name Troy and he does ask you to find more ladies for him for the job since he got a container on the wharf that he got to clear.”
Four women turned up at the Timheri Police Station yesterday to give statements against the swindler and his wife, while charges are pending.
According to reports, the perpetrator who advertises in the Classified Ads in the printed media, dupes unsuspecting young ladies by promising them jobs since he was opening a store in Georgetown and wanted to help persons on the East Bank to secure jobs.
He also reportedly said that transportation would be provided for the workers.
One young lady said that the Classified Ad read “Vacancy for females between 18 and 26. Must be living between Diamond and Soesdyke telephone # 697-1206.”
She said that after making the call the perpetrator told her to meet him at a spot in the city, after meeting the man in the city, she was told that a fee would have to be paid to purchase a T-shirt that bared the logo of the company. “He said $3,500 was the price for the top.”
After handing over her money she was told that she would receive a telephone call notifying her when she would start working.
However, she invited another friend to join her in the job application, and she was shocked to learn that after making contact with the said man that she was given a royal run around to meet with him to enquire about the further details of the job.
“Me and my friend went to town and made many phone calls to this man and he said that he will meet us, but he had we holding on almost all day. Then he phone turn off now. This man is a petty scamp, but imagine how much people he done do that to.”
