Masked gunmen ‘clean out’ Corentyne supermarket

Three armed bandits on Sunday night almost cleaned out a Clifton Settlement, Corentyne, Berbice supermarket after cutting through the roof in one of the county’s major heists so far this year.
The men had earlier tied up watchman, Patrick Gomes, to ensure that their operation was unhindered.
Kaieteur News understands that the supermarket is owned and operated by Rafeek Kasmalle, 55, of 54 Belvedere, Corentyne.
According to reports reaching this newspaper, around 23:30 hours on Sunday Gomes was sitting on a chair on the eastern side of the building, when he was approached by the bandits who ordered him to remain silent. He complied.
One of the bandits then used the watchman’s shirt to tie his hands behind his back. He then proceeded to tape the man’s mouth with duct tape, then placed him to lie on the ground. The men climbed onto the roof of the building and cut the zinc to gain entry to the supermarket.
They proceeded to remove $465,000, some $20,000 worth of GT&T and Digicel phone cards, eight Cellular phones valued$360,000, 10 I-pods valued $ 400,000, eight MP3 Players valued $1.2M, a quantity of perfumes valued $ 190,000 and one DVCR Player valued $286,000.
After securing the items the bandits, who were all masked and who all carried guns, cut several padlocks on the western door and made good their escape.
The watchman subsequently managed to free himself, and alerted persons around then made a report to the police at Whim, Corentyne. No one has so far been arrested.
