Victory Valley Royals open schools’ tournament
The representative teams that will compete in the Victory Valley Royals Schools’ Basketball Championships assemble at the Mackenzie Sports Club Court yesterday afternoon.
The Victory Valley Royals yesterday held a gala opening for the seventh edition of its schools’ tournament at the Mackenzie Sports Club Court where major stakeholders in the sport gave the event their blessing in the Mining Town of Linden.
Representing the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF), Public Relations Officer, Michael Burnett said that it is at the grassroots, schools’ level of the sport that players understand the fundamentals of the game.
“Have a good time and understand the concept of team work.
This is a place where you can have lasting memories. Remember sportsmanship and respect the game, officials and other team mates during the tournament,” Burnett told the seven participating schools.
In addition he reminded them that “a spectacular pass is always greater than a spectacular dunk,” during his brief address that followed the singing the National Anthem and the recital of the pledge.
Representing the primary local sponsor of the event, Digicel, Business Development and Sponsorship manager, Gavin Hope said that the success of the tournament, last year especially, is what motivated them to support the Victory Valley Royals.
“What we saw last year was basketball at a very high level. I want you to remember that while you play hard, you must encourage discipline.
I wish all the teams the best and may the best team win,” Hope told the basketball-savvy community.
Defending Champions, Linden Foundation and Kwakwani Secondary were engaged in a keen opening battle last evening to bounce off the tournament.
Kaieteur Sport will report on the result of that game in a subsequent edition.
