As a result of the recent prison escape from the Camp Street penitentiary by a murder accused, a senior prison officer, Kevin Pilgrim has been transferred and the two interdicted wardens, Mark DeYonge and Colin John, called back on duty.
The interdicted officers were reportedly on duty in two of the four towers located around the said prison compound the day the inmate escape.
According to reports, senior officials had indicated to the two interdicted officers, De Yonge and John that they could resume duty after weeks of them being sent home.
It has been close to two months since the prison escape and the law enforcement authorities have been unable to recapture the escapee.
Meanwhile, reports coming out of the Camp Street jail implicated Pilgrim, who was transferred to a penitentiary in New Amsterdam as the individual who aided the escape.
At the initial stage of the investigation, DeYonge and John were relieved of their duty without any official indication in the form of an interdicted letter.
A source from the jail said that some time last week the interdicted ranks were told to resume duty. When questioned about any departmental action that might have been meted out the said wardens, the source was unaware. “They were just called back on the job; no meeting; nothing.”
The source also related that since the escape there have been several “shake up”. Certain senior officers were transfered to penitentiaries across the region.
“After the jail break management dem transferred a lot of dem same senior officers who are known of condoning with illegal activities in the Camp Street Jail”.
As a result of a certain officer voicing his concern to Kaieteur News over the security situation at the said jail, he was immediately sent home. Up to this date the warden has not received any proper indication of his interdiction.
Several of his colleagues had reported that they believe that he was treated unfairly. The wardens added that it is not like the report their colleague gave was far from the truth.
“The officer in-charge himself know that security at the jail is compromised, so why when officers voice their fears they are victimised?”
It was further mentioned that the faster the authorities admit that there are grave problems Camp Street prison is facing the better.
