– GTTA preparations already underway
By Edison Jefford
The intense local attempts to develop and decentralise Table Tennis (TT) ricocheted regionally when the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) was informed on Friday that Guyana will host the blue-ribbon Caribbean Senior Championships.
Executives from the association were part of an extensive meeting yesterday to discuss all the necessary components to host the Caribbean Championships following the news from the Caribbean and Regional Table Tennis Federation (CRTTF). The date for the event is August 19-25 and the GTTA hopes to attract all regional affiliates for an intense and extraordinary competition including Aruba and the extremely strong Santa Domingo, Puerto Rico and Martinique teams.
Those teams are expected to compete among Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica and other Caribbean teams. GTTA President, Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene was elated with the development when he spoke with Kaieteur Sport. “We submitted our willingness to host the event and I am glad that the CRTTF has confidence in us to do an excellent job with our preparations and execution. Finally, international table tennis will return to the Mecca of local table tennis, The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall,” Greene said.
Initially, St. Lucia was identified as the host country with St. Kitts as the alternative host, but the two islands had not met the necessary criteria of the Caribbean federation. Guyana’s interest in hosting the Championships was upheld following those developments.
“This is all part of the development and momentum that we had started in the sport. This will not only impact the players, but schools and communities. This is the height of our programme and I am happy that we are making steady progress in the sport,” Greene added.
He said that he is sure that Guyana will be able to host a memorable tournament given the recent renovation of the Sports Hall and the technical efficiency of the GTTA that held a clinic for their umpires and officials last month as part of ongoing training.
According to Greene, the necessary components to host the event, technical and otherwise, will have to be pristinely managed so that Guyana can have a successful and impressive competition that will set standards for their Caribbean and regional counterparts.
“We want to fortify the strength of the Caribbean region in table tennis and the Caribbean Championships will be a good place to start,” he said, adding that the event will have a positive impact on the global image of the country in the sport.
Guyana has not won the Men’s team title in 30 years and it would be interesting to see how the hosts perform with home court advantage. For now, preparations have commenced to host what is expected to be a keen battle for dominance in the region.
