Now set for April 9 and 10
The Steering committee of the Berbice school Table Tennis sub Association has once again been forced to push back the two-day Table Tennis competition for school children and those attending Tertiary Institutions in Berbice by another week due to the unavailability of the venue which is proposed to be the Berbice High School auditorium.
The tournament, which was first scheduled for Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 March and then Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 April, has now been finally set for the weekend of Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 April at the Berbice High School.
The tournament, which will be sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, will be played in five categories namely the U10, U13, U15, U18 and U21 categories and will be for both boys and girls. Participants are expected to come from Primary and secondary schools both private and public, the New Amsterdam and Upper Corentyne Technical Institutes, The Port Mourant Training Centre and The University of Guyana Berbice campus.
Meanwhile, training sessions are continuing throughout the county in Both East and West Berbice on Saturdays in addition to sessions in the afternoons with Coaches Desiree Lancaster, Gibran Hussein, school teachers Jermaine Glasgow and Cordell Austin and Floyd Conway. National coaches Linden Johnson and Ray Anderson are also expected in the ancient county to do stints along with senior players in Berbice.
Schools with tables and those interested in having coaching done at their respective schools can make contact with any member of the steering committee. Racquets, balls and other necessities are expected to be provided by the GTTA; however players who are in possession are asked to walk with their racquets.
Incentives for the tournament will be available for the top three finishers and other outstanding performers in the respective categories. (Samuel Whyte)
