Police on the lower East Coast of Demerara are currently looking for an officer attached to the Guyana Revenue Authority licence office who has been finger in the theft of a Toyota Allion car.
The owner of the car, Zamar Alli Hussain, of Atlantic Gardens said that on Wednesday evening he parked his car on his parapet. He said he went to do some work and when he returned home he noticed that his car was gone.
According to Hussain before he reached home he received a call saying that his car was not there but he did not believe.
The man said that he immediately reported the car missing to the Sparendaam Police Station. Hussain said that he even placed an advertisement on television but in the meantime, he and some friends began searching for the vehicle.
On Thursday the man said he received a telephone call saying that the car was parked under a house at Meadow Bank. Hussain said that he decided to verify the information he received with a policeman.
Initially when they arrived at the location they were told that the car which was covered under the house was a Primio and not an Allion.
“We decided to take off the cover and then we see it was the Allion…The man who was at the house said that the car belonged to his friend who worked at the Licence office.”
Hussain said that when he contacted the GRA employee the employee told them that the car was bought in Suriname and only needed to be registered.
“He tell we that he didn’t know who he was talking to. Is when he realize that I was the owner of the car then he say he want to return the car and settle the story.”
The car has since been lodged at the Sparendaam Police Station and investigations are being conducted.
Meanwhile this newspaper was told that the GRA employee has since gone into hiding. Reports are that this may not be the first time that the man has been involved in selling stolen cars.
