Football fans, relieved that the rains have abated, are expected to turn out in their droves when the excitement continues in the Mayor’s Cup football extravaganza tomorrow evening with an exciting double header.
Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United would go head to head with Santos FC in the supporting match to Pele FC and Rhythm Squad FC. The matches witnessed so far have all been action packed and there is every indication that the trend will continue as the tournament advances into the quarter finals stage.
Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United FC has won this tournament two years ago and obviously would be thirsting for another hold of the championship trophy. The players have already signaled their intention with an 8-0 drubbing of BV/Triumph last week.
Dwayne Jacob is in ripping form evident from his hat trick of goals in that match. He will be supported by Warren Gilkes who netted a brace as well as Shawn Bishop, Leon Grumble and Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams, all breaching the BV/Triumph defense.
Santos’ coach, Dwayne Babb, while cognizant of Alpha’s ability is equally optimistic that his boys could upset that team. He said that he would be placing his confidence in strikers Michael Pedro and
Gerald Whittington, two match winning players that would be going hard at the opposition.
Mr. Babb said that he will place his confidence on centre backs Jermaine Fraser and Lennox Charles to ensure that Santos have as good a chance as any to pull off a victory. “This will be a top game and we are prepared for whatever Alpha presents,” said a confident Babb.
The coach is obviously happy with his team’s performance against Den Amstel in their first match but remembers the 3-0 defeat suffered to the Guyana Defense Force in last year’s tournament. “We will employ every means, within the realms of fairness to win this game,” pronounced Babb.
On the night when Rhythm Squad defeated Den Amstel, Pele had inflicted a 5-1 beating on Seawall FC. Now, Rhythm Squad will battle Pele in an attempt to distinguish the better team. Rhythm Squad would bank on their point men Gordon Grant, Devon Millington and Ceon Jones to advance to the next stage. Then there are the defense players in Mark Gilkes, Sherwyn Hope and Kevin Roberts, all capable ball weavers.
Pele’s strength would lie in their capable midfielder, Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant while Marvin Joseph would lead their striking line along with midfielders Daniel Wilson and Sheldon Noble who will shore up their positions in search of victory.
The matches are all tantalizingly juicy and promises much for the football hungry fans as each team aspires to win the million dollars first prize up at stake.
