Oma Persaud, a poor housewife, of La’Resource Village, Essequibo Coast, is pleading with the relevant authorities for some sort of justice after her husband was beaten severely by his employer.
The distraught woman related her story to this newspaper.
According to Mrs. Persaud, she said her husband, 54-year-old Sohan Persaud, a labourer, sustained severe injuries to both his left and right hands, legs and neck, after he was dealt severe blows, with a cutlass, by his employer.
The mother of seven recounted the horrible ordeal. Oma said that Sohan worked with the businessman for seven years and an additional 30 years with his employer’s relatives. On the day in question, Mrs. Persaud said that her husband left their La’Resource residence, accompanied by his two youngest sons, with the intent of harvesting a few vegetables on a plot of land he usually cultivates routinely for his employer.
“My husband worked as a labourer, for his employer, [name given] who owns a rice mill and it is customary for him to pick the vegetables and sometimes share with his fellow workers, or even sell, in order to fend for his family.’’
Mrs. Persaud said that while her husband was engaged in reaping squash and pumpkins, his employer, who lived obliquely to the garden, noticed Sohan and ventured after him.
The woman recounted that Sohan’s employer mercilessly beat her husband about his body with a cutlass.
“Because of where we lived, I observed the entire beatings. Although my husband was bleeding, his employer challenged him to (fisticuffs.) I could not have done anything to save my husband from those blows.
“All I did was appeal to the employer]to stop beating the man “before he left in your hands,” Mrs.Persaud, cried.
Mrs. Persaud, who said she was too scared to report the matter to the police, has since found the courage to report the matter to the Dartmouth NDC.
The Overseer of the Dartmouth NDC said that Mrs. Persaud’s report was not the first recorded report of that nature that has been lodged at the office.
“This is not the first case, we had similar reports, especially from the businessman’s employees, and several issues were also raised at the NDC, about the businessman,” he added.
The overseer, who has since, reported the matter to the Charity Police station, has, alerted members of the welfare office at Anna Regina about Mrs.Persaud’s plight.
Mrs.Persaud said that her husband has sought employment at another business. “His finger is still bandaged. But because we are so poor, the man is taking advantage of us.”
