Police on the East Coast of Demerara have reached a dead end in their investigations into last Monday’s raid on the Correia Mining Company office at the Ogle Airport, which resulted in the murder of 55-year-old guard/driver Solomon Burke.
Sources close to the investigations have indicated to this newspaper that the ex-employee who was detained may not be linked to the crime after all.
The man, who was dismissed from the company earlier this year, was picked up by investigators based on certain information provided to them.
Police went as far as to search his Craig, East Bank Demerara home, but nothing incriminating was unearthed.
And since the 72-hour mandatory detention period has come to an end, the police might have no other choice but to release the suspect.
While investigators were able to lift fingerprints from the scene, a source indicated that they have not been able to match any with those in their files.
“These people have to be a new breed of criminals,” the source told Kaieteur News.
Meanwhile, the investigators are still trying to enhance the tapes retrieved from surveillance cameras around the facility.
A source had indicated that since the area where the crime took place was dark, the images of the perpetrators were not too clear.
During the attack, another guard who was stationed in a guard hut, several yards from the actual scene, had observed that the lights were switched off before the perpetrators commenced their operation in earnest.
On Monday last, around 04:30 hours, in what was described as a military-style operation, gunmen shot the security guard/driver dead and carted off four firearms, $100,000 and other items during the raid at the Ogle Airport.
Solomon Burke, of 27 Vigilance, East Coast Demerara, was killed while resting in the company’s minibus that was parked at the site. From all appearances he was ambushed by the bandits who had entered the facility from the unguarded rear. He was shot to the heart, from close range.
The gunmen proceeded to ransack the finance office of the Correia Mining Company, carting off cash and other valuables before turning their attention to the small armoury that houses the company’s firearms.
According to police, the gunmen escaped with two Remington 12-gauge shotguns and 37 cartridges, two .32 Taurus pistols and matching rounds, and four bulletproof vests, all belonging to the company, which also operates Trans Guyana Airways.
